Kids on
the Block -
Unforgettable Educational
Programming
The Kids on the Block are specially crafted, life-sized
puppets with individual personalities and histories
designed for each program. The Kids on the Block
program is unique in child abuse prevention education.
Children who are reluctant to share can interact freely
with the puppets. The puppets are then able to respond
with clarity and candour to the questions and concerns
of the children. Each ‘Kid’ comes to life through
puppeteers. Our puppeteers receive special instruction
on the handling of puppets, training on protocols for
reporting child abuse, and guidance on how to respond to
the questions of students.
Kids on the Block uses puppetry to educate Grade 3 and 4
students about physical abuse and sexual abuse. The
script material discusses the difference between
discipline and abuse, how and who to tell, and validates
the feelings of children who have experienced abuse in
their own lives.
This program first came to Huron County in the late
1980’s and was operated by the local Children’s Aid
Society. Later the program moved to the Rural Response
for Healthy Children. This program reaches hundreds of
boys and girls each year.
